Montana State University – Bozeman, commonly known as MSU, is a public university located in Bozeman, which is the county seat of Gallatin County, in the US State of Montana, situated in the northeast part of the state. During the 2000 census, the city’s population was estimated at a number of nearly 30 000 inhabitants, fact which makes Bozeman the 5th largest city in the state. The city was named after John M. Bozeman, who is the founder of Bozeman Trail, and its residents are often referred to as the Bozemanites.
MSU was founded in 1893, being known then as Agricultural College of the State of Montana, first starting as a state’s land-grant college. The institution was later renamed Montana College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, becoming commonly known as simply Montana State College, by the 1920’s, and officially becoming Montana State University on July 1, 1965, due to the fact that the state’s assembly recognized its continuing growth and excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
Since it was founded, MSU rapidly grew, offering today baccalaureate degrees in over 50 fields of study, master’s degrees in 41 fields, as well as doctoral degrees in nearly 20 fields, provided through its 9 different colleges. The student enrollment has been estimated at a number of nearly 13 000 students, and the university’s faculty has reached a number of 420 part-timers and 700 full-timers.
The athletic teams from MSU are known as the Bobcats, who participate in the NCAA Division I (I-FCS for football), in the Big Sky Conference, covering various sports areas, which include basketball, tennis, rodeo, skiing, track and cross country. The university has experienced several victories, over the years, including in 1956, when the Bobcats have won a share of the Aluminum Bowl in Little Rock, the Bobcats being best known for their achievements in basketball, and the university being known as the home of one of college basketball’s legendary teams – the Golden Bobcats, in the late 1920’s, who achieved fame through that decade, by playing `racehorse basketball`.
